Meet Dr. Peter Thompson
Dr. Peter Thompson, M.D.
“In my clinic, I always want my patients to know they are heard.”
Dr. Thompson is a double board-certified plastic surgeon with experience in both reconstructive and aesthetic surgery. He understands that no two patients are the same and believes that every patient deserves a plan for surgery that maximizes safety while simultaneously achieving their individual goals. Dr. Thompson’s patients most appreciate his patience and attentiveness, as he strives to take the time to listen and understand what his patients really want.
“My philosophy is simple – treat each patient like you would a member of your family.”
Dr. Thompson knows that, for his patients, there is no such thing as a small surgery. He understands the stress and emotional weight of medical decision making and planning to have an operation, whether for elective reasons or an unanticipated medical diagnosis. He strives to make his patients feel comfortable, calm, and confident that they are going to receive excellent care – the same care that he would give his mother, brother, or child. Dr. Thompson will work with you to develop a plan that is safe and effective and will discuss risks, benefits, and alternative approaches. As a surgeon and educator, he takes pride in being knowledgeable about both new innovations in plastic surgery as well as tried and true techniques.
Dr. Thompson has special interest in both reconstructive and aesthetic surgery of the face, breast, and body. He has extensive experience caring for patients with breast cancer and performing both implant- and tissue-based methods of breast reconstruction. He particularly enjoys caring for patients with massive weight loss after bariatric surgery, as well as patients in the transgender community.
A native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Dr. Thompson attended Washington and Lee University in Virginia for his undergraduate studies followed by the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He completed both general surgery and plastic surgery residency training at Emory University School of Medicine. Before transitioning to Peachtree Plastic Surgery, Dr. Thompson was a faculty member at Emory in the Division of Plastic Surgery where he was recognized and awarded for his professionalism, teaching skills, and clinical acumen; he remains a clinical adjunct faculty member at Emory. Dr. Thompson has been an invited speaker to both regional and national conferences including the Annual Breast Symposium of the Southeastern Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons and the Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. He has published his original research in leading plastic surgery journals and continues to work on academic pursuits in his spare time, including research on ways to reduce infection after breast surgery. Dr. Thompson believes strongly in the importance of international medical outreach, and has participated in Global Health educational exchanges with Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia.
In his free time, Dr. Thompson enjoys traveling, gardening, running, reading, cooking, and trying to learn new skills like playing the piano. On weekends, he can most often be found cheering on his two children at their soccer games and swim meets. Dr. Thompson’s wife Jennifer is a reproductive endocrinologist at the Emory Reproductive Center.
Dr. Thompson has privileges at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital, Northside Hospital, Emory St. Joseph’s Hospital, and Emory Aesthetic Center.
