Breast Reduction Surgery
When discussing breast surgery, implants or augmentation comes to mind. But there are women whose breasts are so large that they are problematic and cause issues such as back and neck pain, skin irritation or rashes, poor posture and interference with daily activities. Reduction mammoplasty is a procedure that can alleviate these problems and improve confidence. The surgery involves removing excess fat, breast tissue and skin from the breasts. If necessary, the size of the areola can be reduced. The result is a bust that’s smaller, lighter, firmer and lifted.
There are multiple techniques for breast reduction. The most common involves an “anchor” shaped scar which encircles the areola and extends downward in a straight line, then follows the natural crease under the breast. A “lollipop” or “short scar” technique may be used depending on the amount of tissue to be removed. Excess glandular tissue, fat and skin are excised and the nipple and areola are repositioned and the breast reshaped.
A breast reduction is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. Incisions are covered with tape for approximately three weeks. The sutures will dissolve on their own over time.
