Breast Augmentation
Through breast augmentation, it is possible to add or restore volume and fullness to a woman’s breasts to improve their appearance and feel. Breast augmentation surgery involves using implants (silicone or saline) or fat transfer, to enhance the size of your breasts or restore breast volume that has been lost after having children or undergoing weight loss. An implant is typically inserted through an incision in the crease under the breasts or around the areola and is placed under (submuscular) or above (subglandular) the pectoralis chest muscle. When discussing your options with Dr. Metcalfe and Dr. Ma, we will go through saline vs. silicone gel filled implants, round vs shaped implants, smooth vs textured implants and the risks and benefits associated with each type and what is most appropriate for you.
This is an outpatient surgical procedure that is generally well-tolerated and normal activity can be resumed within one week, while aerobic and strenuous upper body activity should be avoided for 4-6 weeks. Mild swelling or bruising is common but resolves within a few weeks. Drains are not typically needed. Patients are required to wear a surgical bra for four weeks after surgery and are advised to avoid underwire bras for 2-3 months.
