Mastopexy / breast lift
Also known as a mastopexy, a breast lift raises the breasts by removing excess skin, tightening the surrounding tissue and raising droopy nipples back to their original higher position on the chest well. A breast lift will also reduce enlarged areolas. Breast lifts can be beneficial for patients who have gone through pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, and aging. Breast lifts also help some patients battling with gravity and heredity. For those with smaller breasts, an augmentation may also be performed with the mastopexy to improve fullness and confidence.
A breast lift is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. The procedure involves repositioning the nipple and breast tissue, removing excess skin and sculpting the breast to improve the shape, projection and contour. The incision may be a lollipop pattern around the areola and vertically downwards and sometimes transversely in the natural crease under the breast. The incisions are covered with tape and all stitches are dissolvable over time.
A breast lifted is best suited for women with sagging, droopy breasts who are in good physical condition and are emotionally stable and realistic about their expectations.
Patients are required to wear a surgical bra for four weeks after surgery and are advised to avoid underwire bras for 2-3 months. Normal activity can be resumed within one week while strenuous aerobic activity and upper body weight training should be avoided for 4-6 weeks.
